Happy New Life
A.k.a. Emmaâs Story
Part One
âDammit! Move!â Charlie exhaled loudly as she stared at the cars in front of her.
âToday of all days. Driving through Manhattan?â She looked in the rearview mirror, then at the side mirror, then straight ahead at the road again. Alecia, riding shotgun, observed her, holding back a chuckle.
âWeâre going to be late,â Charlie raised one eyebrow, keeping her focus on the street and the mass of people on the pavement, ready to celebrate 2018 come midnight, as she went on, âNow thatâs a thought that should make me happy.â
She released her grip on the wheel, sighed, and tightened her hold again.
âCross that street and I run you over! Yeah,â she said, shaking her head before frowning in surprise at the sound of Aleciaâs laughter filling the car. She glanced at her before looking back at the road again as they neared Washington bridge.
âWhatâs up?â Charlie asked.
âOh, nothing. One would think youâre the one en route to meet the step-family, not me.â
Charlieâs smile was tense. âI know. Sorry. And theyâre not myâ¦family.â
âI know that, sweetie,â Alecia said, gently squeezing Charlieâs arm through her long sleeved T-shirt. âI just donât know what else to call them.â
Charlie glanced at the passenger seat and smiled. âItâs complicated, huh? What the hell am I dragging you into?â As she spoke, Charlie reached for Aleciaâs face and pulled a few of her dark-blond locks away from her face.
âIt will be fine,â Alecia said, rubbing Charlieâs thigh.
âYouâre right. Iâm sorry. Itâs just, you know, itâs not like Iâve seen them often, except for the double J team.â It always made Alecia smile the way Charlie referred to her younger half sister, Jessica, and her boyfriend, Justin. âOr Em, of course,â Charlie gazed at the window as she said her ex-girlfriendâs name. She looked back at the road as she stated, more confidently, âI certainly havenât seen them all at once, and definitely not for such a special occasion. Itâs really not how I envisioned spending New Yearâs Eve, you know. Why the hell did I say yes?â
âI think it will be great. You want to see her.â
Charlieâs head turned to Alecia in a second. But Alecia smiled. âNot Emma. Your mother. You know what I mean.â
âJust Elisabeth. Shannon was my mother.â
âI know. I didnât meanââ Alecia stopped at the gentle look Charlie gave her.
Charlie took Aleciaâs hand in hers and brought it to her lips for a soft kiss while she stared at the road, careful not to run over the many jaywalkers.
She let a gentle laugh out before speaking. âAnd you thought you were the one with issues when we first met, huh?â
Alecia chuckled. âWell, your situation was quite something, indeed. Still is, I guess.â
âNah,â Charlie swept the air with her hand, âWonder why everyone even made such a big deal about it: My mother, Shannon, died when I was sixteen, except that she and my dad were not my biological parents since I was, in fact, the result of a strangerâs rape, and abandoned just as soon as I popped out.
